The three checks:
  1. The CPU and motherboard must use the same physical socket.
  2. The motherboard chipset and hardware must support that CPU family.
  3. The installed BIOS must be new enough to recognize the exact CPU.

1. Check the physical socket

Examples include AM4, AM5, LGA1200, LGA1700 and LGA1851. A BIOS update cannot make a CPU work in a physically different socket.

2. Check the chipset and CPU generation

Two boards can share a socket but support different CPU generations. Older AM4 boards may require later firmware for Ryzen 5000. Intel 600-series boards may require a BIOS update for later LGA1700 processors. Treat chipset-level compatibility as a warning, not final proof.

3. Find the exact motherboard model and revision

Read the model printed directly on the motherboard or shown in System Information, BIOS, the product box or purchase record. Gigabyte and some other manufacturers also use hardware revisions such as Rev. 1.0, 1.1 or 1.2. BIOS files can differ by revision.

4. Use the official CPU-support list

Open the exact motherboard support page and locate its CPU support list. Find your processor and note the minimum BIOS version listed beside it. Compare that requirement with the BIOS currently installed.

5. Decide whether you can update normally

If the computer already boots with a supported processor, use the motherboard's built-in firmware utility—such as ASUS EZ Flash, MSI M-Flash, Gigabyte Q-Flash or ASRock Instant Flash—following the exact manufacturer instructions.

6. Understand BIOS Flashback

Some boards can update BIOS from a USB drive without a working CPU or display. Names include BIOS Flashback, Flash BIOS Button and Q-Flash Plus. The feature is model-specific; a USB port alone does not prove the board supports it.

7. When an older CPU may be required

If the board lacks CPU-less flashing and cannot boot with the new processor, you may need an older supported CPU, a retailer or repair shop update, or a manufacturer-supported boot-kit process where available.

Before flashing:
  • Download only from the motherboard manufacturer's official support page.
  • Confirm the exact model and hardware revision.
  • Read notes about required intermediate updates, management-engine firmware or file renaming.
  • Use stable power and do not shut down, reset or remove the USB drive during the update.
  • Do not update merely because a newer version exists when the system is stable unless the update is needed for CPU support, security, stability or another documented reason.

After the update

The first boot may take longer while memory retrains. BIOS settings can reset, so recheck boot order, XMP or EXPO, fan settings, virtualization, Secure Boot and any storage-controller options you previously changed.
